I sat up and finally took off my shoes, placing them neatly beside the bed. Then I stood and walked back into the living room. I moved toward the kitchen out of habit, then stopped halfway and turned around. I did not need anything. That was the problem. My body wanted motion because my mind would not settle, and there was nowhere for that motion to go. I came back to the couch and sat again, leaning forward this time with my elbows on my knees. My eyes dropped to the ring. Removing it crossed my mind. I did not do it. Not because I wanted to keep it on. Not because it meant anything more tonight than what it had meant when Ethan handed it to me outside my door. But if I took it off right now, it would feel too much like admitting the night had gotten to me more than I wanted it to.
