"But you are," she says but there's no accusation in her voice.
It's just a fact, one that I just announced not long ago.
"You're going back to Crystal Lake and I'm staying here. We're two Alphas with two packs that need us and we can't just... abandon our responsibilities." She points out.
"No," I agree. "We can't do that.”
Silence falls between us again. It's heavier this time.
Penelope pulls back slightly, wrapping her arms around herself like she's trying to hold something together.
The vulnerability in the gesture makes my chest ache.
"So what do we do?" she asks quietly. "We can't keep living like this only seeing each other when there's a crisis or when one of us can spare a few days away. It's not practical.”
She's right. We are mates, bound together with a mating
