I found her birthday in the household file.
I knew the date. Amelia and Emilia were twins, so of course they shared a birthday, but I'd always associated that date with Emilia. I'd never stopped to think about what Amelia wanted or how she spent it. Seeing her name beside the date made me realize that.
Emilia had only recently returned to New York, and too much of my attention had gone back to her. I knew what she liked to eat and the things she enjoyed. Amelia had been my wife for two years, yet I couldn't answer the same questions about her. That wasn't something I could blame on work.
I found Ellis in the pantry.
"I want to do something for Amelia's birthday. Tell me what she likes."
He looked at me. "You're asking me, sir."
"I'm asking you."
