The patch of trees was not very thick and I came out into a clearing. The clearing was another two lane blacktop that ran parallel to the blacktop I'd just escaped. A station wagon sat on the shoulder of the road with two girls and a young woman standing next to it.
"Won't start," one of the girls said as I slowed my running.
"What's wrong with it?" I asked even as I wheezed to catch my breath.
"Won't start," the other girl explained.
"You wouldn't happen know anything 'bout cars, huh?" the woman begged.
Truth is, what I know about cars could be put into a match box and rattled around. But male instinct being what it is, I knew I had to at least try.
