Modric’s POV Three days after our wedding. That was the date written at the bottom of the envelope. I stared at it in Mary Ann’s hands. Something about those five words made my stomach tighten. Three days after our wedding, I had barely been home. I had avoided the Luna Wing. Avoided meals with my wife. Avoided every opportunity to speak to her unless duty required it. And when I had not been avoiding Mary Ann, I had been with Velvera. “What does it say?” I asked quietly. Mary Ann continued staring at the envelope. “I remember some of it.” “You do not have to open it.” “I know.” “We can put it away.” “I know that too.” She looked at me. Her expression was strange. Not frightened. Not ashamed. Almost curious. As though she was about to meet an older version of herself.
