EMBER’S POV
The first thing I register is Knox’s hands on the steering wheel — white-knuckled, veins standing out, gripping so hard the leather creaks.
We’re moving fast, too fast, and the world outside is nothing but darkness and snow and mountains I don’t recognize.
I don’t remember falling asleep. The last thing I remember is sobbing like a baby because of my father before everything went to s**t.
Now my head is pounding and my mouth tastes like copper and we’re tearing through the night like death itself is chasing us.
“Wait. What’s going on?” My voice comes out rough, still thick with sleep. “What’s happening?”
Knox doesn’t look at me. His jaw is clenched, eyes fixed on the road. There’s blood on his collar, and I’m pretty sure it isn’t his.
“Harrison’s breaking Gale out.”
