KNOX’S POV The walk to Hale’s wing has never been this long, and I have made it a thousand times. I’m at the head of them with Daxon and Reyes on my heels and four of the search unit behind, and our boots are loud on the old boards in a way I have never once noticed in my life, because nobody in this house has ever had cause to move down this corridor at this speed. A maid comes out of the linen room with an armful of sheets and takes one look at us and flattens herself into the wall. The sheets slide out of her arms onto the floor, and she doesn’t bend to pick them up. She just stands there against the panelling, eyes down, and lets us pass.
