I should have wanted to watch him fall.
Yet allowing Lorenzo to kill him unsettled me because I had promised Alexandra I would deliver him into her hands.
Today, knowing he would finally burn in hell would have to be enough.
"Are you alright?"
"Relieved."
I forced out a small smile.
"It feels surreal that all of this is finally ending. The taste is bitter, to be honest. I'm not celebrating... but I'm not sad about becoming an orphan either."
"It's the end of your personal devil."
He tested the edge of a boning knife I had dreamed of using myself.
"César will take you back to the hotel."
"Will you tell me when it's over?"
"I'll even send photographs, if you want."
His dark humor almost made him smile.
"See you later, cara mia."
He kissed me goodbye, gently stroking my cheek.
