“You got a new boyfriend and you didn’t tell me?”
I winced. My mom wasn’t yelling but I could feel the disappointment in her voice. She sounded betrayed.
“I was going to tell you face-to-face, Mom.”
“Serena.”
“I was! I intended to tell you after I went back for the holiday.”
There was silence on the other end of the phone for a while. My mom called me every other week, but the minute my phone started ringing this night, I knew she had seen the news.
Maybe it was stupid for me to go public with my relationship first, half of it anyway, before I told my family I was seeing someone new.
My mother exhaled. “I’ve been so worried about you since your wedding got cancelled.”
I clenched my jaw, hating that everyone still brought up Douglas whenever they knew about Rafael.
