The moon’s core begins to scream. Not metaphorically. Not poetically. A real sound. A deep, resonant, bone shaking howl that vibrates through the entire void like a dying star drawing in its last breath. Light erupts from the core’s fractures. Blinding silver. Jagged black. The cracks pulse with chaotic rhythm, each one widening faster than the last. The air thickens. Gravity twists. The floating platforms buckle, jutting sideways as though the void itself is trying to escape what is happening. Then the core ruptures. A blast of energy detonates outward. Jax and I are thrown apart instantly. I slam into a floating shard so hard the breath is knocked from me. Stars explode across my vision. A ringing fills my ears. The entire void spins. My ribs ache.
