Carla Benjamin watched her second graders run out of the classroom. It had been a long hot day and she was exhausted. It shouldn't be allowed to work in these conditions. She heard her colleagues making as quick an exit as they could; nobody wanted to stay in this oven a minute longer than they had to. Carla wished that she hadn't scheduled a conference with Mr and Mrs Barton this afternoon, but she hadn't foreseen this heat wave when Mrs Barton scheduled it. Carla sighed. She didn't understand why Mrs Barton couldn't come and talk to her on her own. Why did she have to have her husband with her? It wasn't like little Jimmy was in any trouble.
