The first steady beat of my child's heart loosened the knot around my lungs.
Virella lay pale against the pillows in the medical wing while the healer moved the scanner across her stomach.
"The child is unharmed," she said. "Lady Virella suffered bruising and shock, but there is no sign of serious injury. She should rest for the next few days."
Relief hit me so hard I had to close my eyes.
They were safe.
Grandmother arrived before the healer finished packing her instruments. Elvira followed several steps behind, her face drained of color.
"This cannot go unpunished," Grandmother declared. "Rowena attacked the woman carrying Moonreign's heir. She must be stripped of her remaining authority immediately."
Virella stirred. "Maelis, please. I don't want more conflict."
