River’s mouth parted in shock.
Her mind was burning with too many threads—conspiracy, betrayal, treachery among his own court. And now, a trial that could sentence him to death.
She reached for his hand discreetly, lacing her fingers with his. His grip was weak, but present.
She wanted to say something—We’ll fix this. I’ll fight for you. I won’t let them win. But before she could speak—
A guard cleared his throat sharply.
“Your Highness,” he said, eyes narrowed, “the trial will begin in a few minutes. It’s time.”
River’s eyes locked with Heiko’s. She could see his pain, his exhaustion—but beneath it all, there was a flicker of something burning brighter.
Defiance.
She nodded once and rose from her chair.
“Then let’s give them a trial they’ll never forget,” she said softly.
