It wasn’t the threat of exposure that shook him most—it was that he had been forced to use his last vial of cloaking spell to vanish from the tracking senses of those who chased him… probably a royal guard. The magic had burned like acid across his skin when activated, a small price to pay—but the cost of needing it meant something had gone wrong. Too close… far too close. He sniffed the air again, confirming what he already knew—someone had been on his trail. And that someone was powerful enough to get within range. He would have to be more careful from now on. Damn it, he swore under his breath. The last thing he needed was a nosy warrior sniffing around the forest, meddling in a plan years in the making
