Fiona Margaret insisted I take the afternoon off, citing Archie's own instructions from the week before, and for once I didn't argue with her about it. My body still felt worn thin from the fever, and the thought of a few hours where I didn't have to measure every step or soften every word felt like more relief than I'd had in over a month. I drove to the little secondhand bookstore near my old college campus, the one that sold used textbooks at half the price of anywhere else, hoping to find a copy of the tax law book I needed before my exam in a few weeks.
