Fiona My alarm went off at four thirty every morning now, though calling it sleep before that felt generous. I'd start the day getting my mother settled, medication laid out, breakfast made and left within reach of her bed, before driving across town to the mansion to become someone else for twelve hours straight. Then home again by evening, just long enough to check on her, make sure she'd eaten, listen to her cough less than the day before, before I opened my textbook and tried to make my eyes focus on anything at all.
