Mom had one of the house staff help me get ready.
I stood in front of the mirror while the woman zipped the dress. Dark green, almost black under the soft light. It clung to my breasts, dipped low between them, then followed the line of my waist before settling over my hips. The back was open to the base of my spine. Thin straps. A modest slit that still showed the long line of my thigh when I walked.
“You look beautiful,” Mom said from the doorway, already smiling. “Let them see it tonight.”
I barely recognized myself. Hair in loose waves. Soft makeup that made my mouth look fuller. Elegant. Exposed. Dangerous.
