Sera’s POV
After Dr. Ian left, I sank onto the plush couch in the corner of the suite, my body aching with a profound, bone-deep fatigue.
I didn't know if Gideon was coming back, and the last thing I wanted was to be caught lying in his bed. The thought of being near another Alpha's mattress sent a shudder down my spine. Part of me wanted to pray to the Moon Goddess for safety, but I quickly dismissed the thought. She had never helped me before. Why would the goddess start listening to me now?
Exhaustion eventually won the battle against my racing thoughts. Wrapped in the lingering warmth of the hearth, I drifted off into a heavy, dreamless sleep.
Sometime later, I was roused from my slumber by the strange, weightless sensation of being lifted.
Instantly, that rich, intoxicating scent of sandalwood and golden amber wrapped around my senses. Gideon.
As he gently lowered me onto something impossibly plush, my brain registered the mattress beneath my back. Blind panic surged through my veins like ice water. The memory of Lucian’s cold, demanding hands flashed behind my eyelids, and I immediately began to thrash, my hands shoving wildly against Gideon’s broad chest as I finally opened my eyes.
"Please, no—don't!" I panicked, my voice cracking.
"Shh..." Gideon's voice was like velvet in the quiet room, silk-soft and utterly calm. "I'm not doing anything. You take the bed."
I blinked up through the shadows, still disoriented from sleep, my breath coming in ragged gasps. "What?"
"You take the bed," he repeated softly.
He didn't pull away or react to my frantic pushing. Instead, he carefully laid me back against the mattress and pulled the thick, warm comforter over my shoulders, practically tucking me in like something fragile.
My head throbbed against the cloud-like softness of his pillow, the dull ache in my eye reminding me how depleted I really was. Before I could process his gentleness or shrink away, his large, warm hand lightly stroked my hair, his fingers threading through the strands with a soothing, tender rhythm.
The terror melted out of my chest, replaced by an overwhelming wave of exhaustion. Anchored by his touch and his scent, my eyes fluttered closed, and I slid right back into the dark, peaceful quiet of sleep.
I sat up abruptly, a jolt of panic shooting through my chest as last night's horror rushed back into my mind.
My hands scrambled over my clothes—everything was still intact, fully pulled into place. Looking over at the other side of the massive mattress, the sheets were completely untouched and crisp. Gideon hadn't laid next to me. He had given me the bed and taken the couch, or left entirely.
A heavy, shuddering sigh of relief escaped my lips.
Swinging my legs over the edge, I stood up on shaky feet and walked toward the tall arched window. Looking out, the breath caught in my throat. Sunlight spilled over a sprawling, bustling settlement nestled deep within a dense, mountainous forest. I could see houses, training grounds, smoke rising from chimneys, and pack members walking freely through the cobblestone paths below.
Where am I? I thought, pressing my palm against the cool glass.
To my knowledge, not even Lucian’s top intelligence officers knew the exact location of the Crimson Ridge territory. He spoke of the rebels like they were mindless, scattered wild animals hiding in caves, but looking out at this village, it was stunning. It was pretty, vibrant, and alive.
After a while, a soft knock echoed off the thick oak door. The lock clicked open, and a middle-aged woman walked in carrying a steaming wooden tray of food in one hand and a neatly folded stack of fresh, clean clothes in the other.
She offered a polite, gentle smile as she set the tray on the small table. "For you," she said softly, her voice free of any hostility.
"Thank you," I murmured as she turned and stepped back out into the hall, locking the door securely behind her.
I walked over to the table and stared down at the bowl of hot broth, warm bread, and fresh fruit. My stomach didn't even rumble. After a year of being starved as punishment, living on thin scraps, and having my energy continuously siphoned by Lucian, my body had simply adapted to living on nothing. I wasn't hungry.
Leaving the food untouched, I picked up the clean clothes instead.
