I grew up in a small village in Virginia. Everybody I knew was religious and conservative. Like our neighbors, we were always proper: Spoke properly, dressed properly, and behaved properly. When I was in junior high, I met Tatiana, who was a year younger. Our initial encounter happened when I bumped into her in the hall, and her books fell on the floor. I apologized and helped her collect the stuff. In the days that followed, we happened to see each other on breaks and smiled. One day, I dared to approach her and asked if she would like to meet me at Starbucks. She grinned and admitted she was hoping I'd ask her out.
