“What do you feel?”
She considered it for a moment. “Clear.”
That word fit her.
It fit the way she sat in the saddle. It fit the way she hadn’t looked back. It fit the quiet around her that wasn’t empty anymore. It was settled.
“Then clear is enough,” I said.
She looked at me again. “You don’t think I should feel something else?”
“No.”
“Most people would.”
“I’m not most people.”
That earned a small look from her.
“No,” she said. “You’re not.”
The road curved, and the trees opened slightly ahead. The sky beyond us had started to change color, the late day light thinning through the branches. We would not reach Wraithborne before full dark. We would reach the outer border before night settled completely.
