"Show me what you've found."
Isla turned the journal toward me and pulled one of the open history books closer. Several pages had been marked with thin strips of cloth, and notes covered the paper beside her. She'd done far more than wait for me.
"I started with the names written near the end of the journal."
She pointed to the list she'd made while I was in my office. Some of the names were familiar, while others had only appeared once in the older records. Beside each one, she'd written the title of the book where it should've been mentioned.
"Most of them aren't in the official records."
I looked over the names again and compared them to the open books. The years matched, but the people listed in the journal had been left out. It was as though they had never existed.
