I froze when I saw Lucien Valmont standing behind me, because I had believed every member of Seraphina’s family remained safely inside the human kingdom.
“You should not be here.” I whispered.
Lucien’s eyes dropped toward the crystal hidden beneath my cloak, and his expression immediately hardened.
“Neither should you.” He said and my fingers tightened around the crystal as I took a cautious step backward.
“How did you get inside Dragonspire?” I asked.
“I escaped.” He said.
“From the human kingdom?” I asked and Lucien nodded.
“I discovered what our father had been doing, and I realized staying loyal to him would eventually destroy everyone.” He said.
