I never thought I'd get pinched in a place like this...a dingy little mini-mart on the edge of downtown, the kind where the fluorescent lights buzz like angry hornets and the air smells like stale coffee and desperation.
It was late, past midnight, and the streets outside were slick with rain, reflecting the neon glow from the sign that flickered 'Open 24/7.' I was broke as hell, my wallet lighter than my mood after a shitty shift at the diner. A couple energy drinks and a pack of smokes? That's all I swiped. Easy in, easy out. Or so I thought.
