Abby’s heart pounded as she pulled the tarp tighter around her shoulders, the cold wind whistling through the thin plastic as Brooks drove. The smell of oil and damp rubber clung to the air in the truck bed. Rudy huddled close beside her, his knees drawn up, his body heat doing little to chase away the biting chill that had settled deep in her bones. “Do you think this is going to work?” he whispered, the tremor in his voice unmistakable.
