The door clicked shut behind Abby with a finality that stole the air from her lungs. She stood there for a long second, staring at the wood grain like it might change its mind and open again. Her chest felt hollow, scraped raw, every breath sharp and shallow. Joe’s voice still echoed in her head. Leave me alone. She pressed a hand to her mouth and turned away before the sound in her throat could break free. The hallway was quiet, muted by thick carpeting and soft lighting. Too calm. Too normal.
