The door clicked shut behind Abby with a finality that stole the air from her lungs.
She stood there for a long second, staring at the wood grain like it might change its mind and open again. Her chest felt hollow, scraped raw, every breath sharp and shallow.

She pressed a hand to her mouth and turned away before the sound in her throat could break free.
