Joe had finally stopped pacing like a caged animal and lay stretched out on the narrow bed. The food the guard had brought an hour ago sat untouched on the small table. He couldn’t even bring himself to look at it. His chest ached constantly now, a dull, relentless pain that had nothing to do with the wolfsbane still lingering in his system. His thoughts were consumed by Abby. He could still smell her on his shirt. Rosewater and mint and something uniquely her. He could almost taste her on his lips, and the thought of losing that made his throat tighten. He couldn’t stop seeing her face when she injected the wolfsbane into his IV. The way her hand had shaken. The way her eyes had filled with tears she’d tried so hard to hide. He’d closed his eyes when the burning tore through his veins,
