Abby was sitting at the counter, watching Celia cook, when the phone rang. Norah’s name flashed across the screen.
“Hey, Nor,” Abby said as she answered.
There was a long beat of silence. Then she heard Norah take a shuddering breath. “Abs.”
Abby straightened, her spine going rigid, her fingers tightening around the phone. “What’s wrong?”
She could hear it immediately. The crack in Norah’s voice. The way she said Abby’s name like it hurt.
“There was an… incident at the hospital.” Norah exhaled softly, like she was bracing herself. “A nurse poisoned Joe with wolfsbane.”
Abby shot to her feet so fast the stool toppled backward, clattering loudly against the floor. Celia startled, spinning around with the ladle still in her hand, eyes wide.
