Chapter 19: The One Who Came Back

762 Words
It was just after five. Outside, the sky was shifting into its evening blues, warm light slanting across the Arison Medical Wing as Amelia stood in front of the familiar door once again. She held her canvas tote close, her fingers brushing over the soft cover of The Secret Garden inside — her quiet companion since childhood. But this time, there was something else in her bag too: the blank sketchpad Isabel had gifted her on her first visit. It was still new. Crisp pages. Clean cover. But Amelia had decided something that morning — a small promise to herself, and maybe to him. She would draw something every day while she was here. Just a moment. A glimpse. A feeling. And when he woke up — because she had to believe he would — she’d give it to him. A record of every day he missed. A way to say: You were never alone. With a breath, she knocked. Softly. Then opened the door. Inside, the room was alive in the way soft places become after long stillness. Dr. Levin was by the bed, checking Gray’s vitals, while Vivienne sat close, her fingers gently folded together. Charles stood by the window with Isabel beside him, and Zach lounged against the far wall, arms crossed but eyes alert. The moment they saw her, something shifted — the room straightened in spirit, like a breath held and then released. Isabel smiled first, wide and easy. “Lia.” Her voice carried something more than surprise. Relief. Amelia offered a small wave as she stepped in. “Hope it’s not a bad time.” “It’s perfect,” Isabel said, walking over. “You came back.” “I said I would.” Amelia smiled, a little shy. “I brought some things. My book… and the sketchpad you gave me.” “Did you draw anything yet?” Isabel asked, peeking over her shoulder. “A few things.” Amelia glanced at the floor. “I thought maybe I’d do one each day. Then, when he wakes up…” She trailed off, not needing to finish the thought. Vivienne rose slowly, her face touched with something tender. “That’s a beautiful idea, Lia.” Zach crossed the room, curiosity getting the best of him. “Okay, so what have we got in there so far? Stick figures? Angry doodles? Abstract commentary on hospital food?” “Be careful,” Isabel warned. “She’s good.” “I’m always careful,” Zach said, flipping the sketchpad open. “Liar,” Isabel muttered. Zach let out a low whistle as he flipped through a few pages. “Okay, hold on—this is incredible. This is his hand, right?” He held up a delicate sketch of Gray’s resting fingers, the light catching the curve of the wrist, the quiet tension in the knuckles. “How the hell did you make that look like poetry?” Amelia flushed, caught off guard. “I just… draw what I see.” Zach grinned. “Well, I see why he liked you.” “Zach,” Isabel said, half-laughing, half-warning. Amelia chuckled and turned toward him, her tone gentler now. “How’s your shoulder, by the way? You’re still favoring it.” Zach blinked, surprised by the question — and the care behind it. “It’s healing,” he said, a bit softer. “Slow, but solid. Physical therapy is a nightmare, but I’ll live. Thanks for asking.” “Of course,” she said. “You were in the car too.” His eyes met hers, and he nodded with quiet respect. “Yeah. I was.” The moment lingered, unspoken things passing through it. Then Dr. Levin cleared his throat and closed the chart. “Vitals are holding steady,” he said. “Better than this morning.” Amelia looked toward Gray, and for a second, everything else faded. The others disappeared. There was only the soft sound of machines and the boy in the bed — still, but not lifeless. She walked closer and whispered, just for him. “Hi again.” As she settled into the armchair beside him, Isabel leaned back against the wall, watching with a faint smile. Zach returned to his post but kept glancing over like he didn’t want to miss a thing. Charles and Vivienne exchanged a brief look — the kind only longtime partners could read. She’d come back. Not for obligation. Not for attention. But because she wanted to. And sometimes, that was more powerful than anything.
