I had lost track of Damien, which seemed strange as all evening the man had been glued to my side. Yet, though I worried about where he wandered off to, in his absence, Jake swooped in like he had been waiting in the wings for the opportunity to be beside me.
“Damien seems to have disappeared,” Jake said and sounded annoyed about it. “Didn’t he vow to the Goddess to protect you.”
“Don’t be too harsh,” I told my brother. “This is a big event for him too. I’m sure there are lots of people that he needs to talk to. Lots of places for him to be.”
