We nodded and acted disappointed for them. The female then began complaining endlessly about the restaurant, clearly wanting more attention and our sympathy. We attempted to put a positive spin on their night out, but every time either of us tried, the female would interrupt us and tell us how wrong we are and how much a horrible night it had turned out to be. Once we got into the elevator, we again attempted to lighten the mood and say that the night could be salvaged with minimal effort on their part, but they both seemed to want to paint themselves as victims of forces beyond their control desperate to ruin their "perfect evening."
