My breath caught in my throat.
I couldn't look away from the blood. It wasn't a lot, but that didn't matter to me. All I could see was red. My heart felt like it stopped.
My hand pressed harder against my stomach.
The baby moved beneath my palm. Usually that feeling brought me comfort. This time it only made me more afraid. My eyes filled with tears again.
"Doctor."
The word barely made it out. My voice sounded weak and unfamiliar to my own ears. I wasn't even sure anyone had heard me. Everything around me seemed far away.
I stared down at my leg.
Another tear slid down my cheek. My heart was beating so hard it felt painful. Something was wrong, and I could feel it. The certainty settled deep inside me.
