The house hadn't been this full in as long as I could remember.
Diane had arrived with two suitcases and opinions about everything and within forty minutes of walking through the front door had rearranged the guest bathroom, decided the caterer's proposed menu needed two additions, and informed Cora that the flower arrangement near the entrance was six inches too far to the left.
Cora had looked at her for a long moment and then moved the arrangement.
Aaron had arrived an hour after Diane, quieter, more contained, with a single bag and the quiet ease of someone who knew how to exist in a space without demanding it. He'd pulled me into a brief hug and looked at the house and said nothing for a moment and then said it suited me.
I'd appreciated that.
