(Avery)
My phone rang at half past nine while I was still at my desk reviewing case notes.
I didn't recognize the number immediately but I answered anyway because late calls from unknown numbers in this profession usually meant something worth knowing. The voice on the other end came through fast and slightly unsteady, like someone who'd been holding themselves together for too long and was finally letting it slip.
"Is this Avery Lang?" she asked.
"It is," I replied. "Who's calling?"
"My name is Jade Bennett," she said. "Someone passed your name along to me. Said you were one of the best family lawyers in Midtown and that I should reach out."
"Who gave you my number?" I asked.
"A friend," she said. "She heard your name from somewhere and thought you might be able to help me."
