I had been calm all day.
Through the morning and the afternoon and the getting ready and Diane doing something careful with my hair while Cora stood in the doorway with a checklist and Cole's mom knocked twice to bring me tea she had made herself because she said it was good for nerves.
I hadn't been nervous.
Until I was standing at the top of the steps that led down to the yard. Diane straightened the back of my dress one last time. Said okay. Stepped aside. I looked down at what Cora had built in that yard and felt everything I had been holding calmly all day arrive at once.
White flowers everywhere.
