I got back to the office later than I planned.
The grocery run had taken longer than either of us expected, mostly because Lena kept stopping to check things off her list with the same focus she brought to everything else. I hadn't minded. Standing beside her in the middle of an ordinary afternoon felt like something worth taking slowly.
Ryan looked up when I walked in.
"You're late," he said.
"I'm aware."
"Gerald's office called twice."
"What did they want?"
"Didn't say," Ryan replied. "But the second call came in ten minutes after the first one which usually means something moved."
