I couldn’t tell if she hated the gift, or if she was just shocked by it. She was sitting there staring at the box in her lap like it might go off if she actually touched it.
“I know werewolves aren’t big on guns,” I said, as I steered the jeep down the narrow, twisting road. “But you live in a modern world. Your wolf is awesome, but she’s not invincible.” I nodded toward the handgun in her lap. “You need to be prepared, you need to be able to protect yourself against any enemy.” I swallowed down an unexpected lump in my throat. “You need to be able to protect our baby.”
Her hand went to her belly and her eyes widened. “I’d like to say I’ll always be there to protect you. Or that Louis will take care of you, but you know there will be times when we are unavailable.”
