There was noise out in the corridor when everything should have been silent in the early morning. Banging on the doors, like someone was trying to rouse the dead at five in the morning. The noise made me feel even more irritable and agitated.
Who the hell was out there? Had one of their other prisoners escaped? They were dumb as a box of rocks if they got out and started making all that noise.
I didn’t move from my uncomfortable bed, but lay in the dark, listening as the ruckus drew closer to my cell. Some buried instinct made me long to hunt the noisy creature, to chase it down, to sink my claws into its soft flesh, and silence it…yes, silence. I pressed my palms over my ears, but it did little to muffle the noise.
