It was finally weekend. Family outing day. The house had been loud since morning. Doors opened and closed somewhere upstairs. Footsteps kept moving across the hallway. Someone dropped something heavy at least twice already, followed immediately by swearing. I walked downstairs carefully with my already packed duffel bag hanging from my shoulder while holding Leo’s smaller backpack in my other hand. And yes, I lost the drinking competition that night. Unfortunately. Which was exactly why I was now standing near the staircase at almost ten in the morning while everybody else behaved like they had forgotten we were supposed to leave an hour ago. I dropped both bags near the front door before looking upstairs. “You guys have five seconds to come downstairs!” I shouted. No response.
