He turned away.
That was the version of her he kept - the one who still had that light in her eyes.
A year later, he came back and walked through the wrong corridor of a hospital and saw her through a glass partition. She was lying in a hospital bed, pale as the sheets, with a newborn beside her. No husband in sight. No one at all.
He stood in that corridor for a long time.
The girl with the bright eyes was gone. Whatever Jasper had done to her in that year, it had cost her something that didn't come back easily.
Phineas looked at the newborn. Then back at her.
He turned and walked away.
But he didn't forget. And he didn't forgive. And when the time came, he made absolutely sure that Jasper felt every bit of it.
