"You," Victoria said, turning to him, "are in a hospital bed. I'd suggest saving your energy for more pressing concerns." Her gaze moved over him with something close to contempt. "You're already half in the grave. This doesn't concern you."

I was in the middle of reviewing a compound analysis when my phone lit up.
All missed calls from Martha.
I stared at the screen for a moment. That specific pattern - that many calls, that close together - never meant anything good.
I called back.
She picked up on the first ring.
"Get to the hospital," she said, before I could speak. "Right now. Jasper's mother is here making a scene and you need to come deal with it."
