I was sitting with my mother, watching Mikey. There was something about the way she interacted with him that made me think she actually liked him. But with her, you could never be certain. Sometimes, she would do the exact opposite of what my father expected, just to provoke him.
“Are you going back to Europe?” I asked, eager to change the subject and disrupt the conversation between her and Mikey.
“In a day or two, I think so. But I’m getting a bit bored there. Darling, you should come with me,” she replied.
