Mikey Macey had looked so serious when she told me she didn’t need an elaborate proposal that I’d almost laughed. Not because what she said was funny. It wasn’t. She had been trying to protect me from believing I had to compete with the kind of life she had grown up with, where every celebration involved an event planner, every gift came in a box from a*****e with security at the door, and every memorable moment seemed to include people watching from the sidelines. What nearly made me laugh was the fact that she apparently believed I didn’t already know her well enough to understand that. I had never considered renting a ballroom, involving the stadium, or arranging some ridiculous public spectacle where thousands of strangers watched me ask the most personal question of my life.
