Zander
The call from Sarah came just as I was gathering my things to leave for the evening.
I almost let it go to voicemail.
Almost.
Something made me answer.
“Sarah?”
“Zander…”
The second I heard her voice, I knew something was wrong.
“What happened?”
“It’s Gina.”
Every muscle in my body tightened.
“What about Gina?”
“She’s okay.”
Those two words let me breathe for exactly half a second.
“But…”
I hated that word.
“…you need to come downstairs.”
“What happened?”
“Just come.”
The line went dead.
I didn’t wait for the elevator.
I took the stairs.
Twenty floors.
Normally I would’ve laughed at anyone who chose the stairs over the elevator.
Today I barely noticed the burn in my legs.
All I could think about was Gina.
