“Come on,” he says, gesturing for me to follow him into the backyard. We take seats on either side of the little picnic table parked out in the grass. I’m fidgety for some reason. Pent-up energy from the not-so-pleasant visit with Andrew, maybe. Eric doesn’t miss it. “Eat,” he says, nodding at the bag he’s just handed to me. “You’re too skinny.” “Why does everyone keep telling me that? I’m not hungry.” “Camila.” He seems like such a parent when he uses that tone on me. It feels so familiar that I actually welcome the sound. A little piece of normalcy in my chaotic world. “Fine,” I concede, pulling out the burger. I have to admit, it does smell delicious. The first bite is heaven.
