“Alcohol has a way of making you forget thoughts that won’t leave you alone. You look like you could use some.”
I chuckle. “Fair enough. Lead the way.”
He steers me in the opposite direction. I resist the urge to look back over my shoulder. As we head towards the staircase, I’m pretty sure I hear a high-pitched laugh.
A laugh that’s heartbreakingly familiar.
But quite apart from being sad, I feel my heart lift. If she’s laughing, she can’t be so bad off here, can she? It still doesn’t take away the sting of Isaak’s betrayal, but it’s a comfort to me all the same.
I fall behind him as we walk. Mostly so I’m free to ogle his broad shoulders to my heart’s content. It strikes me that I shouldn’t want to ogle him at all right now.
But my eyes still scale down his tall, athletic form.
