RUBY paused for a minute, cold air gripped her.
“Hello, are you there? How did you know? Have you been at my boyfriend's?”
Ruby gasped. She felt the cat got her tongue.
“No… no, yes. Sorry, I mean no—”
“Ruby?” Jessi called softly.
She straightened immediately, shaking her head vigorously as though trying to shake guilt away.
“No ooo. Come on, how can I do that?”
“But you haven't answered the question yet.”
“Well, let's say, I always have my way around. I have got eyes everywhere, my love.”
There was a brief silence.
“Fine. I will handle it,” was all Jessi said.
That triggered Ruby.
“Is that all—”
And Jessi hung up.
“Urghhh. Weakling,” she said as she stared at her phone, “fight with him, break-up with him fast enough and watch me enter already. Ahh!”
She later went to bed, angry.
***
It was almost 12 PM when Jessi stormed into Kaylan’s apartment.
She didn’t knock. The door wasn’t locked, so she pushed it open and barged in like a woman on a mission. The sudden intrusion jolted Kaylan from where he sat on the couch, scrolling lazily through his phone. He sprang to his feet, startled.
“Hey—”
But she didn’t even look at him.
Her heels struck the floor sharply as she walked straight past him, her eyes already scanning the space like she was hunting for something. She moved quickly, purposefully— straight to the bedroom.
Kaylan frowned, confusion flashing across his face as he followed behind her.
“Hey, what’s going on?” he asked, trying to catch up. “You didn’t even say hello. Jessi, what’s wrong?”
No response.
She was already in the room, pulling things aside, glancing behind furniture, opening spaces that didn’t even make sense.
Now he was genuinely thrown off.
“Jess, what the hell are you looking for?” he demanded, his tone sharpening.
“Where is it?” she snapped, crouching slightly to check behind the closet.
“Where is what?” he shot back. “Did you leave something here? Because I don’t understand what’s happening right now. We haven’t seen each other in days, and you come in acting like this?”
She stopped.
Slowly, she turned to face him.
“When did you get back from your trip?” she asked, her voice tight.
“This morning,” he replied, watching her carefully now. “A few hours ago. Why?”
Her eyes narrowed.
“You are sure you went on that trip? You didn’t lie to me?”
Kaylan let out a short scoff, masking the flicker of alarm that rose inside him.
“Of course I did. Come on,” he said smoothly, stepping closer and slipping his arms around her waist. “What’s all this about?”
She didn’t melt into him like she usually would.
“Ruby told me you were here,” she said flatly. “With another woman. That you have been here for two days.”
The name hit him like a slap.
Ruby.
For a split second, something dark crossed his face, but it vanished just as quickly.
“Ruby?” he repeated, then shook his head with a quiet laugh. “Jessi… come on. You of all people should know better.”
Her brows furrowed slightly.
“She is lying,” he continued, pulling away just enough to grab his phone. “In fact… I should show you something.”
His fingers moved quickly across the screen before he stopped and turned it toward her.
“Look at this.”
Jessi’s eyes scanned the chat. Her expression changed.
“What…?” she whispered, disbelief flooding her features. “You mean… she has been trying to get to you?”
“For a long time now,” Kaylan said, his tone calm, almost disappointed. “I didn’t want to tell you because I didn’t want to ruin your friendship. But you see why I kept my distance.”
Jessi stepped back slightly, her face tightening.
“Oh my God… I can’t believe this. Ruby? My best friend?”
Kaylan sighed softly, stepping closer again.
“Not everyone who smiles with you is truly for you,” he murmured, pulling her into an embrace. “Some people are just waiting for the right moment.”
She leaned into him this time, shaken.
“I trusted her…”
“And you should trust me,” he whispered, resting his chin lightly on her head.
Across his face, hidden from her view, a slow, satisfied smile spread.
He had done it again.

Jessi left not long after. Still shaken and still angry, but no longer at him. At Ruby.
The door clicked shut behind her, and the silence that followed felt heavier than before.
Kaylan stood still for a moment and then let out a low chuckle.
“Incredible,” he muttered to himself, shaking his head slightly. “You are actually incredible.”
He dropped back onto the couch, running a hand through his hair, amused by his own performance.
“Ruby, Ruby…” he clicked his tongue. “You really tried.”
Just then, his phone buzzed.
He glanced at it lazily, still riding the high of his little victory.
Then he picked it up.
His smile faded instantly.
**Rico.**
His brows pulled together slightly as he opened the message.
And then, his entire expression changed.
> *I’m pregnant.*
For a second, he just stared at the screen. His expression still unreadable.
“What?” he muttered, sitting up straighter.
Another message came in almost immediately.
> *We need to talk.*
Kaylan exhaled sharply, running his hand over his face.
“Pregnant?” he repeated under his breath.
His mind raced. Confusion, calculation and disbelief took over him.
Then suddenly, it hit him.
But it was just two days ago. The last time she had been here had just been two days ago and that had been the only time he had deposited into her, how come she now was trying to pin a pregnancy on him?
In his utter confusion, he burst into laughter.
