The girls were happy; Xavier was giving me cheek, and I wouldn't want to change a moment of it. I was on cloud nine right now; this was what family was all about. I couldn't ask for more or better.
I loved it when Cora put it all on Xavier's shoulders; I thought he was going to faint in shock, the tip of his ears flushed pink, his only outward sign that the question had touched him, or as my father called it, 'duck shovelling ', sending the decision to someone else.
