Almost. The door opens behind us and I feel Atticus before I hear him, the bond tightening briefly as he steps into the room. He pauses just inside the doorway, already pulling on his jacket, eyes flicking to me first and then to Axel. “I’m heading out to patrol the border,” he says, his tone calm but clipped, “I want to make sure there aren’t any day walkers watching us after last night.” My chest tightens. “Again,” I say, unable to keep the edge out of my voice this time. He turns toward me, expression softening as he crosses the room, and he leans down to press a kiss to my forehead, then to my lips, lingering just long enough to feel intentional without inviting conversation. “I’ll be back soon,” he says quietly. He doesn’t sit. He doesn’t look at the table. He turns and leave
