The Divorce He Never Expected
POV: Amelia Lancaster
For three long weeks after that night, Ethan barely spoke to me, spent almost every evening over at the guest house with Sophia, and came back late just to sleep in his separate bedroom while I stayed alone in our room.
Every time Ethan came home from work early and tried to sit down with me in the living room to talk, Sophia would suddenly appear at the main door, complain about feeling dizzy, and collapse onto the floor right in front of him.
"Amelia, please get some cold water and call the family doctor right now," Ethan yelled during one of those afternoons as he quickly picked Sophia up in his arms, carrying her straight upstairs without asking if I was okay.
"She always faints the moment you try to speak to me, and you never see how convenient her timing is," I said as I stood near the stairs, but he didn't even turn back to look at me as he rushed into her room.
Things only got worse a few days later when I was standing near the stairs in the main hall, and Sophia walked up to me while holding a glass vase in her hand.
"He will never choose you over me, Amelia, so you should just give up and leave this house before I make him hate you forever," Sophia whispered with a cruel smile on her face, and before I could even reply to her, she sliced her own arm with the sharp glass and dropped to the ground, screaming loudly for help.
Ethan ran into the hallway from his study at that exact moment, saw the blood spreading across Sophia's sleeve, and immediately rushed over to check on her while she pointed her shaking finger at me.
"She pushed me because I asked her for a glass of water, Ethan, and she broke the vase and cut my arm with it," Sophia sobbed loudly, clinging tightly to Ethan’s shirt while hiding her face against his chest.
"I didn't touch her, Ethan, she cut herself with the glass just as you walked out of your office," I said, stepping back because I was shocked by how far she was willing to go just to frame me.
Before I could finish my sentence, Ethan stood up, walked over to me with an angry look on his face, and slapped me hard across my cheek in front of all the servants standing nearby.
"You have gone way too far this time, Amelia, and I am sick and tired of your jealousy toward a sick woman who just needs help," Ethan shouted while holding Sophia, and the painful sting on my face made my eyes fill with tears.
"I will never let you lay a hand on me again," I said, holding my red cheek while looking him straight in the eyes, and I turned around and walked upstairs to pack my things without looking back.
An hour later, I walked down the stairs with a single suitcase and tossed the printed divorce papers onto the table in front of him, while the butler stood quietly in the corner.
"Sign it, Ethan, because I am done being your wife and watching you play hero for another woman," I said, placing a black pen right next to the documents on the table.
"If you think playing this game will make me drop everything to chase after you, you are wrong, so I'll sign it now and you can come back when you calm down," Ethan said with a bitter laugh, picking up the pen and scribbling his signature on every page without reading a single line.
I grabbed the signed papers from the table, walked out of the house into the pouring rain, and got straight into my car because I wanted to get as far away from him as possible.
I was driving down the highway toward the legal office when a truck ran through the red light at high speed, crashing right into the side of my car, and everything went completely dark before I could even press the brakes.
When I opened my eyes hours later, I was lying on a narrow bed in a quiet hospital room, and a nurse walked in while looking at her clipboard with a sad expression on her face.
"Mrs. Kingsley, you were in a severe accident, and we tried everything we could, but I'm so sorry to tell you that you lost the baby," the nurse said gently, but as soon as she left the room to grab some paperwork, I slowly sat up and touched my belly.
"You need to help me leave right now before my husband finds out I'm here," I whispered to my personal doctor who walked in right after, because I knew Ethan’s family owned this hospital and they would take my baby away if they knew the child survived.
My doctor helped me transfer quietly out the back exit to a private clinic in another city, and by the time Ethan rushed to the scene of the accident, all he found was a wrecked car on the side of the road.
Three days later, Ethan was sitting at his office table when his assistant knocked on the door and placed a brown envelope right in front of him.
"What is this?" Ethan asked without looking up from his laptop screen, thinking it was just another business contract waiting for his approval.
"Sir, that is the official divorce decree from the court, and Miss Amelia's lawyer sent it over along with confirmation that she has completely cleared out her bank accounts and left the city," the assistant said softly, and Ethan's hand froze right over his keyboard as he stared down at the official seal on the paper
