I didn't know what caused the sudden change in Damien's attitude and behavior. As long as I had belonged to him, he had been cold and distant. He wasn't always cruel, but he was uncaring.
Since he had begun to help me prepare for my Acceptance Ceremony, his demeanor had softened very slightly. He had treated me with a distant, absentminded kindness. He had spared me from punishments and accepted my offer to trade myself for Jacob and the other slaves.
I did not fool myself that Damien could have easily captured or killed all of them with his powers. He could probably have taken the blade from my throat without trying. I wasn't sure whether he would have cared to do so or just let me die and found another pet.
